Epidemiology
- Pheochromocytomas are diagnosed in 1 to 6 per million people per year
- It has an annual incidence in the United States of 500 to 1,100 cases per year
- Peak incidence occurs at age 30-50
- Pheochromocytomas occur in about 0.1%-0.5% of patients with hypertension
- Paragangliomas occur in approximately 15%-20% of individuals diagnosed with pheochromocytoma
- Prevalence of malignant pheochromocytomas has been commonly reported to be approximately 10%, although it may be as high as 33% or higher, depending on how malignancy is defined and the underlying genetic mutation
