2008 Pheochromocytoma Symposium in England a Big Success

PheoPara Alliance President, Dr. Edward Kauffman, led a Patient’s Roundtable at the highly successful 2nd International Symposium on Pheochromocytoma (ISP), held on September 17-20, 2008, at Queens College in Cambridge, England.

Conference chairs Morris J. Brown and Ashley B. Grossman provided an excellent program of speakers covering a broad array of topics and attended by approximately 200 participants.

The list of speakers included physicians and scientists representing more than 10 countries including the host United Kingdom as well as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the US. Participants came from four continents making this a truly international symposium.

The program was divided into two sections – one focusing on the scientific audience and the second focused on patients and families of patients.

The scientific program included speakers and panels on a wide range of topics including – Tumor Biology, Biochemical Diagnosis, Case-Based Discussions on Imaging, Advances in Therapy for Malignant Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma, Germline Syndromes, Screening Techniques (including genetic, biochemical, and imaging methods), and Management Strategies.

The Patient Program featured speakers and open discussion on an equally diverse range of medical topics including Diagnosis, MIBG, Chemotherapy Management, and Recent Advances in Pheochromocytoma Research. Additional sessions, specifically targeting patient-related issues, included presentations on preparing for surgery as well as the Patient’s Roundtable headed by Dr. Edward Kauffman, President of the PheoPara Alliance.

The Cambridge setting was well-situated to provide an appropriate environment for the attendees who participated in the exchange of information regarding the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma tumors.

The Conference was a resounding success for patients, doctors and scientists. Plans for the Third International Symposium on Pheochromocytoma are underway.
